Spiritual dryness

When prayer feels dry

You can pray without having to produce a feeling.

Bring the truth of this moment

You may be saying familiar words while feeling very little. You can name that honestly: “God, I am here, and this is difficult.” An absence of consolation does not by itself tell you that you have failed.

Keep the next step gentle

For today, read one mystery, keep a brief silence, and pray a manageable portion. Avoid measuring today against a particularly consoling season in the past. An experienced practitioner may need simplicity just as much as a beginner does.

Receive support

The Catechism and Pope Francis both acknowledge dryness among the difficulties of prayer. A trusted priest or spiritual director can help you discern what is happening in your own life. Persistent low mood, exhaustion, or distress also deserves appropriate care; spiritual accompaniment and professional support can belong together.
