Daily prayer

What if my mind keeps wandering?

Returning gently is part of prayer, too.

Notice, then return

A shopping list, a difficult conversation, tomorrow’s appointment: ordinary life often follows us into prayer. When you notice your attention has moved, return to the next word or the name of Jesus. You do not need to restart the decade.

Use one small anchor

Before a decade, read just one sentence of Scripture. Keep the image nearby, or notice the bead in your hand. If a practical concern keeps returning, write one brief reminder and set it aside. Choose one aid rather than trying them all at once.

Let concern become intercession

Sometimes the person on your mind is someone to pray for. Offer that concern simply, then continue. The Catechism treats distraction as a familiar difficulty of prayer; noticing it can become an occasion to turn toward God again. A perfect stretch of concentration is not the measure of your sincerity.

Continue at your own pace

Spiritual dryness

When prayer feels dry

You can pray without having to produce a feeling.
